A splendid effort, apskafters! This must be the mother of all collageborations.

So, with the Apskaft Symphony and Popskaft safely in his back pocket, what's next for our beloved monkey?

We may have talked about this before, but I've been thinking about an album with different versions of the same song. Lately I've been amusing myself by listening to the numerous cover versions of famous songs that can be found on Spotify. Ten versions of "Ça plane pour moi”, "Back in the USSR", or "The Ace of Spades", for example - and I can't help wondering what it would sound like if the Apskaft collective put its paws on some classic hit, turning it inside out in 10-15 different ways.

I'm looking forward to participate in any upcoming projects during the fall, since I'm only a few weeks away from having all my gear up and running again! :-)

    Shine those shoes, Bill!

  • That would make an interesting record, because none of us have ever made faithful cover versions. There would be diversity even if all of the tracks are the same.

I'll give my vote to Ace of Spades for now.

  • Oh, and here's the list of ongoing and future projects I try to keep updated.

I think we could do this cover project and the soundtrack thing simultaneously.

  • i'm up for participating in an album of versions of the same tune.

  • Me too.

But what song? I'd like 21st century schizoid man, for instance.

Also cover a whole record should be interesting. Can you imagine Sgt. Pepper, or The Dark side of the Moon?

By the way it's OK for me the multicover record of a single track.

But what song? I'd like 21st century schizoid man, for instance.

Songs I've been listening to in multiple versions, as mentioned above:

    Ça plane pour moi
    Video Killed The Radio Star
    Sheena Is A Punk Rocker
    Back In The USSR
    Ace Of Spades
    The Model
    See Emily Play
    (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
    Staten & kapitalet
    Message In A Bottle
    I Fought The Law
When The Saints Go Marching In
    La Bamba
    Girl U Want

Just to get discussions started. :-)

    Shine those shoes, Bill!

  • perhaps something that more usually resides beyond the realm of pop music could be more interesting. or something that doesn't already have a definitive version.

  • Caravan, perhaps? Or is it pop music? Brötzmann's Machine Gun or Coleman's Free Jazz? Something traditional (I mean, like that folk stuff that's really folk, not Bob Dylan)?

Here's one very inspiring cover (it's pop music, though, I think): http://www.last.fm/music/Bugotak/_/Kon%27+Togethy+%28The+Beatles%27s+Come+Together%29

  • Bugotak's "Kon' Togethy" is great! I love it. The tune comes partly from "Bad Penny Blues" by Humphrey Lyttleton and was copied by the Beatles at least twice (they did a piano riff on "Lady Madonna" which was only slightly changed from the piano in "Bad Penny Blues" and then again in "Come Together". Bugotak's Siberian version alters the tune again. This might be a good choice for us to cover! I'll certainly be doing a cover of this to appear on some album somewhere.

  • How about a Christmas album (in August and September!) we could use this song:

  • Or (smiles with devilish glee) how about singing The Beatles "Come Together" to the tune of "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year"? Maniac laughter: HaaaaaHahahahahahah!

  • I couldn't resist. I went straight ahead and recorded this. Come Together (sung to the tune of The Most Wonderful Time of the Year)
